GP Store is Grameenphone's content platform to sell games, music, wallpapers, ringtones, handsets etc. The project goal was to redesign the store and develop in html5.
I benchmarked the existing portal with local online stores and, Google Play and App Store and Google Play came out top.
I thought it would be a good idea to 'copy' the similar layouts from Google or App store but user study indicated my assumption was wrong.English is not the main language in Bangladesh, and we were designing for people from all walks of lives. Significant number of users did not understand what 'Download' stands for but understood what 'Free' is.
Users cared most about the 'Price' and many missed the prices at first sight. They though if they pressed 'Download' they will be charged.
They said they liked 'Rating' but only noticed it after mentioning. So I got rid of the 'Ratings' from the home page and moved it to the description page, and made the 'Price' more clear and bold.
Initially, I aimed for a minimalistic look with lots of white areas. But our customers had difficulty associating the store with Grameenphone brand. Test showed they loved the bold use of colors. So for the final design, I used colors for better brand presence.
We conducted in-depth interviews with about 50 customers in three iterations. We also conducted a focus-group and Card-sorting for this project. I contributed to conduct all of these user studies.
I built the prototype using Bootstrap 3.0 and we used this prototype for the usability testing.
This project was a great source of learning for me. For the first time, I was designing for people accross the whole nation. I learnt the importance of using the First Language as the default one. I gathered knowledge about how the non-techy (majority) customers think compared to tech-savvy (minority) customers. It helped me a lot in my next big project.
